Prof. Max Welling

Prof. Max Welling is a distinguished figure in the field of machine learning, serving as a Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft Research AI4Science and a Professor and Research Chair in Machine Learning at the University of Amsterdam, where he directs the AMLAB. With a background in theoretical high energy physics, including a PhD under Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, he transitioned to machine learning, undertaking postdocs with pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton. His expertise lies in advancing deep learning, evidenced by his influential contributions to Variational Autoencoders, Graph Neural Networks, and Equivariant Neural Networks. He is also co-founder and CTO of the startup CuspAI in Materials Design.
