What you will do
# Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning for Quantum Systems
This postdoctoral position at Leiden University offers an exciting opportunity to conduct research at the intersection of machine learning and quantum many-body physics. The role is based within the Applied Quantum Algorithms (aQa) group, which spans several institutes including the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION), the Leiden Institute for Chemistry (LIC), and the Leiden Mathematical Institute (MI).
The successful candidate will join Dr. Anna Dawid and her research team, contributing to a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment that fosters scientific freedom and structured mentoring.
## Research Topics
Research topics include developing interpretable, reliable, and scalable machine learning methods, neural quantum states, understanding the simplicity bias of overparameterized neural networks, and applying these approaches to quantum systems such as ultracold quantum simulators. The postdoc will have the opportunity to lead collaborations focused on scalable Hamiltonian learning and the detection of quantum phases of matter and their order parameters in exotic systems. Exploring energy landscapes of neural quantum states and simplicity biases of neural networks are also key areas of interest.
## Requirements
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in physics, computer science, or a related field, with a strong publication record in machine learning or quantum physics. Experience in ML applied to scientific problems is a bonus. Essential skills include proficiency in Python programming, with familiarity in PyTorch or Tensorflow considered advantageous. High proficiency in English and the ability to work collaboratively across scientific disciplines are required. Candidates should demonstrate creativity, curiosity, and an open mindset.
