Monumental raises $32 million to expand robot fleet and take first steps in the US

Amsterdam-based company Monumental has raised $32 million, approximately €27 million, in a Series B funding round. The round was led by US firm Khosla Ventures, with renewed participation from existing investors Plural and Hummingbird. The announcement came around 15 July 2026.

Monumental builds autonomous robots that lay bricks for facades and structures on-site, work that would otherwise require manual labour. The company was founded in 2021 by CEO Salar al Khafaji and CTO Sebastiaan Visser. With the new funding, Monumental intends to expand its engineering team, grow its fleet of more than 150 robots across Europe and the UK, and launch its first pilot projects in the United States.

Robots for a sector facing labour shortages

Monumental targets one of the most labour-intensive segments of construction. Bricklaying and facade construction require a large skilled workforce, while the construction sector in many European countries faces a structural shortage of tradespeople. Monumental's robots operate autonomously on construction sites and are designed to take over these tasks.

In practice, this means robots that lay bricks on-site under varying conditions on a construction location, placing different demands on hardware and software than factory robots, which operate in controlled environments. Monumental currently has more than 150 robots in operation across Europe and the UK, though the company does not disclose figures on revenue or completed projects.

Use of the new funding

The company has identified three concrete destinations for the capital raised. First, Monumental aims to expand its team of hardware and software engineers. Autonomous construction robots require continuous development on both fronts: the mechanical systems that allow the robot to function on rough terrain, and the software that directs and adjusts the robot's behaviour.

Second, a portion of the funds will go towards further scaling the fleet in Europe and the UK, where Monumental is already active. Third, the company will launch its first pilot projects in the United States. This represents a new market for Monumental, and pilot projects typically serve to familiarise local construction partners with the technology and to test whether the robots perform well under American conditions and regulations.

Khosla Ventures leads the round, existing investors follow on

Khosla Ventures leading the round is notable. The California-based fund is known for investing in technology companies with a substantial hardware component, but invests relatively infrequently in European companies. The continued participation of Plural and Hummingbird, both of which were also involved in the Series A in early 2024, indicates that these parties remain confident in Monumental's direction.

The Series A in January 2024 raised $25 million. The $32 million Series B follows just over eighteen months later, suggesting that Monumental is aiming for rapid growth and has investors on board willing to support that pace. No figures have been published on the company's valuation at this round.

Significance for the European robotics and construction tech scene

Monumental is one of the few European hardware companies in the construction sector to successfully attract consecutive US venture capital rounds. This is relevant for other founders in robotics and construction technology: it demonstrates that internationally, risk capital is available for hardware-intensive propositions beyond software-as-a-service, provided they have proven traction at scale in the market.

For policymakers and construction sector partners in the Netherlands and Europe, the move into the US is a signal that Amsterdam-based deep tech companies do not necessarily look to neighbouring countries for their first foreign markets. Whether the US pilots grow into a structural presence will depend on the results Monumental achieves there, and on how quickly the construction sector is willing to integrate autonomous robots into standard building processes.
