# Assistant Professor in Language and AI Engineering
## Position Overview
Join the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU/e as an Assistant Professor to explore the frontiers of language, cognition, and AI. This position is embedded in the Data & AI cluster within the Data Science Domain, focusing on responsible innovation in data-driven society.
## Key Responsibilities
- Conduct fundamental and applied research in AI, language, and cognition
- Develop and publish research in leading academic conferences and journals
- Explore the intersection of AI, language, cognition, multimodality, and human-AI interaction
- Investigate interpretable and trustworthy AI systems
- Contribute to teaching and education in this field
- Collaborate with researchers within and beyond TU/e
- Build a strong and recognizable research profile
## Research Focus Areas
Primary:
- AI, Language, and Cognition: Fundamental research into relationships between language and cognitive capabilities in large-scale AI models (memory, reasoning, machine understanding)
Combined with one or more of:
- Multimodal Interaction: AI systems interacting through vision, language, and physical interfaces (e.g., robotics)
- Human-AI Collaboration: Models for effective human-AI partnerships in complex tasks
- AI Interpretability and Safety: Techniques to understand AI models, identify biases, and build trustworthy systems
- Societal Impact: Application of AI in critical contexts (legal, engineering, scientific discovery)
## Requirements
- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or comparable field
- Demonstrable high-quality academic research outputs (peer-reviewed publications)
- Strong expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and modern AI architecture
- Strong expertise in language and/or cognition
- Demonstrated research experience in XAI, Multimodal ML, Human-AI Interaction, AI Ethics/Fairness/Safety, or Robotics (highly preferred)
- Experience presenting at international scientific meetings (preferred)
- Motivation to teach and develop teaching skills
- Strong cooperation and interdisciplinary teamwork abilities
- Effective communication and leadership skills
- Fluent English (written and verbal)
