# Associate or Full Professor - Language and AI Engineering
## Position Overview
Join the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at TU/e as an Associate or Full Professor to explore the frontiers of language, cognition, and AI. This position is part of the Irène Curie Fellowship, currently open to female candidates only.
## Key Responsibilities
- Define and develop an internationally visible research line in Language and AI Engineering
- Conduct fundamental research into the relationship between language, cognitive capabilities, and large-scale AI models
- Explore core areas such as memory, reasoning, and machine understanding
- Contribute to strategic development of the field within the cluster and department
- Support and inspire a new generation of students and researchers
- Supervise PhD candidates and mentor postdocs and junior academic staff
- Initiate, acquire, and sustain externally funded research projects
- Contribute to curriculum innovation and course development
## Research Focus Areas
Primary: AI, Language, and Cognition - investigating the relationship between language and cognitive capabilities in large-scale AI models
Secondary (one or more):
- Multimodal Interaction: AI systems interacting through vision, language, and physical interfaces
- Human-AI Collaboration: Models for effective human-AI partnerships
- AI Interpretability and Safety: Understanding internal workings of AI models, identifying and mitigating biases and safety risks
- Societal Impact: Application of advanced AI in legal systems, engineering, and scientific discovery
## Requirements
- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or comparable field
- Strong publication record in leading AI/ML conferences and journals
- Deep expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and modern AI architecture
- Deep expertise in language and/or cognition
- Proven experience supervising PhD candidates and mentoring postdocs/junior staff
- Ability to define, develop, and lead independent, internationally visible research
- Ability to initiate and sustain externally funded research projects
- Clear vision on teaching and learning with demonstrated contribution to curriculum innovation
- Strong cooperation and leadership skills
- Excellent written and verbal English proficiency
## Preferred Qualifications
- Research experience in AI Interpretability/Explainability, Multimodal Machine Learning, Human-AI Interaction, AI Ethics/Fairness/Safety, or Robotics
- Experience presenting at international scientific meetings
